Imagine if you had a team of fully engaged members – full of energy, mentally sharp, emotionally connected, and truly motivated. What if YOU were fully engaged? Do you feel like you are working harder than ever? At times it seems like humans are being forced to operate as machines with no down time until the 8-12 hour workday is done. When we get tired we simply grab another cup of coffee and keep plugging. High performing athletes know that they cannot push themselves constantly without renewing their energy. It turns out that science proves that none of us can perform at our highest levels without renewing our energy.

As a midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy I experienced the mission of the Academy which was to develop midshipmen morally, mentally, and physically…to assume the highest responsibilities of command, citizenship, and government. As a Boy Scout I lived under the Scout Oath to keep myself “physically strong, mentally awake and morally straight.” I have known for years that in order for leaders to perform at the highest level they had to be strong in all three areas of their lives:  physical, mental, and spiritual. What I didn’t fully appreciate was that in order to be at a peak state physically, mentally, and spiritually I needed to be intentional about rest and energy renewal.

Recently I read an incredible book that addresses this issue of renewing energy. In The Power of Full Engagement, authors Jim Loehr and Tony Schwartz discuss their research with top athletes and show how to apply energy management techniques to our everyday lives. In their remarkable book they share the need to manage 4 sources of energy.

4 Sources of Energy Required for Full Engagement

PHYSICAL – Are you physically energized? Exercise, healthy eating, adequate sleep are critical to provide the physical energy you need to fully engage. Yes you need to stress your muscles but you also must allow for recovery.

EMOTIONAL – Are you emotionally intelligent? Positive emotions such as enjoyment, challenge, adventure and opportunity can change to fear, frustration, anger and sadness if our emotional muscles are not managed effectively.

MENTAL – Are you mentally sharp? The ability to operate at peak mental ability is dependent on managing our mental energy effectively. Are you benefiting from some right brain thinking?

SPIRITUAL – Are you spiritually aligned with a purpose beyond your immediate self-interest? Do you have a strong why?

It turns out that our physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual energies are all interconnected. The key to peak performance is not in just pushing ourselves hard but also in the recovery process. It is when we learn to manage this energy that we experience full engagement.

As a leader are you allowing for proper recovery for yourself and your team? Are you focused on “putting in the time” or truly being effective?
